Selayar Island beaches fall into two practical groups: those you can drive to from Benteng, such as Baloiya at about 11 km on the regency's figure, and those that need a joloro boat, such as Liang Kareta and Bone Malea. Wind decides the calmer side: the west from April to September, the east from October to March, according to Wikipedia.
Which Selayar Island beaches can you reach by road or by boat?
Two regency documents do most of the work in this guide to the shore of Selayar Island. The tourism master plan gives distances from Benteng, and the 2024 list of leading attractions gives access and activities. Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism adds travel times and describes the island as having many white-sand beaches. Tempo, citing the regency agency in January 2022, names ten marine destinations. Beside the national park and two islands, those are Baloiya, Punagaan, Pinang, Bonetappalang, Pa'badilang, Tamamelong and Karang Indah.
The table below sorts each place by how you get there, because a coast is published only for Baloiya and Pinang. A guess could send you to the wrong side in the wrong month.
| Beach or coastal spot | Access | From Benteng | What sources list there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baloiya | Road (list) | About 11 km (plan) | West coast (plan); white sand; stays named on the regency list |
| Karang Indah | Road (list) | 17 km (plan) | Named by Tempo among ten marine destinations |
| Pinang | Road (list) | 35 km (plan); about 80 minutes (ministry) | East coast (Selayar Eco Resort); operator's bungalows, glamping tents and restaurant |
| Appatana or Appatanah | Road (list) | 52 km (plan) | Coast not stated. One traveller charters a boat here; an east-coast operator lists a dive site with the same name |
| Punagaan | Road (list) | Not stated | Snorkelling (list) |
| Pa'badilang | Road (list) | Not stated | Snorkelling (list) |
| Je'neiya | Boat (plan) | About 10 km by traditional sailing boat (plan); about 60 minutes (ministry) | Listed as unmanaged in a 2018 study |
| Liang Kareta | Joloro boat (list) | Not stated | Snorkelling, gazebos, toilets (list) |
| Bone Malea | Joloro boat (list) | Not stated | Snorkelling (list) |
| Bone Tappalang | Boat (plan) | About 20 minutes by jolloro from Pattumbukang or Appatana (plan) | Named by Tempo among ten marine destinations |
| Appabatu, Babaere, Dongkalan | Not listed | 4 km, 9 km and 10 km (plan) | Distance only |
| Taloiya | Not listed | 30 km (plan) | Distance only |
You may also meet the labels East Selayar Beach and West Selayar Beach. The ministry uses them for two of the three areas where it says dive sites are concentrated, the third being Takabonerate. Read them as areas and not as single beaches you can drive to. For what sits underwater along them, see the page on Selayar dive sites.
Which beaches are closest to Benteng?
On the plan's figures, the nearest named spots are Appabatu, Babaere, Dongkalan and Baloiya, all within about 11 km of town. Karang Indah is the next step out, and the regency list confirms a road to it. Baloiya is the only one of the near group with any description behind it, so the others are places to ask about locally before you commit a day.
For quiet beaches close to town, Sulawesi.travel, a tour operator, points to Pantai Sunari and Pantai Liang Tarrusu near Benteng. It calls both calm, says facilities are few, and tells readers to bring their own food. The regency list places Sunari Beach Resort at Baloiya, so confirm with whoever is driving you whether that is the same stretch.
TurtlePhD, a traveller's blog, drove the west-coast road by hired scooter from Benteng, the main town, and says locals live on that side with warungs and stores along the way. That is one undated account of how a beach day from town can work.
Where do the regency and the ministry differ?
Mostly they measure different things, which makes them easy to misread side by side.
- Pinang. The plan says 35 km from Benteng. The ministry says about 80 minutes. If both hold, the average speed is under 30 km/h, so plan the return in daylight.
- Je'neiya. The plan says about 10 km by traditional sailing boat. The ministry says about 60 minutes from Benteng and does not name the transport.
- Baloiya. The plan's 11 km is the distance from town. The ministry's 3 km, which it gives as the length of the beach, is a different number altogether.
- Spellings. Sources write Appatana and Appatanah, Bone Tappalang and Bonetappalang, joloro and jolloro. They are the same names, so search for both forms.
What is Baloiya Beach like?
The plan describes a curved, bay-like white-sand beach on the west coast. The ministry says it stretches some 3 km and that tarsiers and wild boar can be seen there. Treat the wildlife as a possibility the ministry mentions and not as something to plan around; the page on the Selayar tarsier sets out what is actually documented about the animal.
Access is by road on the regency list, and the same list names Sunari Beach Resort and Asia Beach Baloiya there, so it is one of the few beaches where a room and a beach may share an address. Being on the west side also ties it to the wind pattern described further down this page. Wikipedia's big-wave months for this side run from October to March, so a January visit and a June visit are different trips.
We found nothing published on lifeguards, shore currents or safe swimming zones anywhere on the island. Ask locally before going in, and read the page on safety in Selayar if you are travelling with children.

Which beaches need a boat?
The regency list shows access by joloro, a local boat, for Liang Kareta, Bone Malea, Pasi Gusung, Tambolongan and Polassi. The plan adds Je'neiya by traditional sailing boat and Bone Tappalang, about 20 minutes by jolloro from Pattumbukang or Appatana. The list also gives Bahuluang island as 20 minutes by car and joloro from Bone Taringan. The Jakarta Post put Pasi Gusung island about 30 minutes by lepa boat from Benteng in 2016.
In practice a boat trip means asking in Benteng or at the departure point, agreeing the fare and the return time before you board, and telling someone where you are going.
Road access on the east coast is patchy. TurtlePhD reports most places there accessed by boat, and our coast comparison covers what else that traveller found. A diver writing in Underwater Australasia says no roads reach Selayar Dive Resort, near the southern tip of that coast. Both are personal accounts and undated. The regency list does show a road to Pinang, so the picture is mixed, and a beach marked as road-accessible may still sit next to one that is not. If you want to swim from a boat more than from the sand, the page on Selayar snorkeling covers which of these stops are listed for it.
Which beaches have facilities?
These are the only places where a source names facilities, or says there are few:
- Liang Kareta: gazebos and toilets, on the 2024 regency list.
- Bahuluang: a villa, restaurant and prayer room, on the same list.
- Baloiya: Sunari Beach Resort and Asia Beach Baloiya, on the same list.
- Pinang: Selayar Eco Resort says it has bungalows, glamping tents and a restaurant on about 2 km of beach. That is the operator's own description.
- Pantai Sunari and Pantai Liang Tarrusu: few facilities, according to Sulawesi.travel.
Management is a separate question from facilities. A 2018 Universitas Negeri Makassar study found 16 marine sites unmanaged, including Liang Kareta, Je'neiya and Bone Malea, while others were run by villages or government. Liang Kareta therefore appears as unmanaged in 2018 and with gazebos and toilets in 2024. Carry water, food and a bag for your rubbish unless someone local tells you otherwise.
Which coast is calmer in which months?
Wikipedia sets out the pattern plainly. When the west wind blows from October to March, big waves hit the west side. From April to September the east wind brings big waves to the east side. People can therefore choose a place to dive, snorkel or fish all year.
Two operators' calendars fit that pattern, which gives it more weight than a single line in an encyclopedia. Selayar Dive Resort, on the east coast, says it opens from October to the end of April and closes outside those months because of the monsoon. Selayar Eco Resort says its west-coast site is open from May to November.
Between April and September, look at Baloiya and the west side. Between October and March, look east, and accept the longer travel. Then check the BMKG marine forecast for Selayar waters on the morning you travel, because a seasonal pattern says nothing about a particular day. Hotels and resorts by coast are on our page about where to stay on Selayar Island, and beach lodges on our Selayar Island resort page.
Are Selayar Island's beaches clean?
It varies with the weather. Journey Beyond the Horizon, a travel blog dated October 2025, says marine debris washes up after storms and at the monsoon changes, more on west-facing stretches during the south-east winds of roughly June to August, and that many coves look pristine again after calm spells. Its timing sits awkwardly with Wikipedia's wind pattern, which puts the big waves on the east side from April to September, and neither source measures rubbish, so read this as one blog's observation. The same guide says Selayar Eco Resort often hosts volunteer clean-ups in May.
Before you fix dates, check the ferry and road legs in how to get to Selayar Island and how many days to allow in our Selayar Island itinerary. Reefs off these shores are covered under Selayar Island diving, inland stops under things to do in Selayar Island, and scooter and boat rates under Selayar Island travel cost.
What else do readers ask about Selayar's beaches?
What is Pinang Beach like?
Selayar Eco Resort, which operates there, describes about 2 km of beach on the east coast and says tarsier families live in the rainforest behind it. Both points are the operator's own description.
How do you get to Pinang Beach?
The regency's 2024 list shows road access. The regency plan gives 35 km from Benteng and the Ministry of Tourism gives about 80 minutes. Leave early and agree your ride back before you set off.
Where is Je'neiya Beach?
The regency plan puts it about 10 km from Benteng by traditional sailing boat, and the Ministry of Tourism says about 60 minutes from town. Neither names a coast. A 2018 study listed it among unmanaged sites, so do not count on facilities.
Are Selayar's beaches crowded?
No source counts visitors beach by beach. The regency's 195 foreign visitors in 2022 is a low figure for the whole regency, but it cannot tell you how a given beach feels on a holiday weekend.
Are there quiet beaches near Benteng?
Sulawesi.travel, a tour operator, describes Pantai Sunari and Pantai Liang Tarrusu near Benteng as calm with few facilities and says to bring your own food. Ask a driver or your guesthouse to confirm the way.
