Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Fares and rates change, and nothing here is medical or legal advice.

Is Selayar Island worth visiting? Yes, if you want a long, narrow, little-visited island with beaches, walls and old villages, and you have spare days for transport that can change. It is a poor fit for a tight schedule. A tour operator's guide proposes a stay of two or three nights, longer with the atoll.

Is Selayar Island worth visiting?

That depends on what you can tolerate. Foreign arrivals are tiny: 195 in 2022 and 1,068 at the 2019 peak, by the count in the regency's tourism plan. So expect few other visitors, and services that are not built around them.

  • Likely to suit you: divers who like walls, travellers who want quiet beaches, and anyone curious about old villages and a long maritime history.
  • Likely to frustrate you: anyone with a fixed connection to catch, anyone who needs reliable connectivity, and anyone expecting a polished resort strip.

The questions below give short answers about Selayar Island, each pointing to the page that goes further. In Benteng, Sulawesi.com, a tour operator's guide, points to a walk along the beachfront and a market where people actually shop. For a longer list of ideas, see things to do in Selayar Island. Divers should read our Selayar Island diving page, and those staying nearer the surface our Selayar snorkeling guide.

Where does Selayar Island lie?

Off Cape Bira in South Sulawesi Province, across the Selayar Straits from the mainland, says Wikipedia, which treats it as the main island of its group. The same encyclopedia puts the group about 150 km southeast of Makassar, in the Flores Sea. The clock is UTC+8. Maps and the distances behind them are on our page answering where is Selayar Island.

How do you get there and how long does it take?

There are two practical routes, by air from Makassar or by road and ferry through Bira.

How do you get there and how long does it take?
LegTime reportedSource
Makassar to Selayar by airAbout 45 minutesSulawesi.com; Trip.com and Rome2Rio say about 50
Makassar to Bira by road4 to 5 hoursWikipedia
Ferry to PamatataTwo and a half hoursSulawesi.com; ASDP and the Ministry of Tourism say about two
Pamatata to Benteng90 minutesSulawesi.com; a traveller blog says about one hour

Airline information conflicts, so check before you plan around it. Wikipedia names FlyJaya as the sole scheduled airline in 2026, Trip.com adds Wings Air, and Rome2Rio shows Air Connect. By sea, rough weather often takes out the afternoon boat, according to Sulawesi.com. The price table on this page lists a press-reported adult ferry fare and an agency flight fare. How to get to Selayar Island compares the routes, and the Pamatata ferry port page covers the arrival side.

When should you go?

Sources define the seasons differently. The regency plan calls May to November dry and December to April rainy. Sulawesi.com's guide calls July to October dry, and Sulawesi.travel says April to October. For the sea, wind matters more than rain, because each monsoon favours the opposite coast. Divers have a separate constraint, since Selayar Dive Resort shuts from May to September. Weigh these up on our best time to visit Selayar Island page.

What language do people speak on Selayar?

Selayar is a Makassaric language with about 130,000 native speakers in 2024, according to Wikipedia. UNESCO describes the Selayar as the major group on the island, alongside Bugis, Bajo, Buton and ethnic Chinese. A 2017 Universitas Airlangga study notes that its vocabulary resembles Makassar, Bugis and Mandar.

We found no record of how widely English is spoken. Plan as though it will be limited away from the dive resorts, and save a few Indonesian phrases and an offline translation pack before you leave Makassar.

What religion do people follow on Selayar?

Mainly Islam. The regency tourism office says it is the most widely followed religion, and that most residents are ethnically Makassar while speaking Selayar day to day, which differs from UNESCO's treatment of the Selayar as a group of their own. Journey Beyond the Horizon, a travel blog dated October 2025, describes a predominantly Muslim population with friendly but modest village etiquette and a Christian minority around Benteng's churches. Neither source sets out a dress code, so ask your host before you enter a mosque, an old village or a ritual.

Is there a hospital and phone signal?

Yes to a hospital: the national hospital register lists a public general hospital in Bontoharu district. Malaria is a separate question: CDC guidance covers rural Sulawesi, so see a travel clinician before you leave. For its name, sea state, seismic history and medical limits, read is Selayar Island safe.

Signal reports conflict. The TurtlePhD travel blog found neither phone coverage nor Wi-Fi on the east coast, while Journey Beyond the Horizon reports Telkomsel signal almost everywhere it went. TurtlePhD's report is undated, and no coverage map settles it. If you need to be reachable, say so when you ask a place to stay, and tell family when you expect to go quiet.

Do you need cash on Selayar?

Carry it. Journey Beyond the Horizon says cash is the only option almost everywhere, reports one ATM in Benteng that worked, and warns that cards may not run outside town. No bank directory confirms a count, so bring what you expect to need from Makassar and treat any machine you find as a bonus. Selayar Dive Resort lists its marine park fee as payable on site in cash. The ferry may be the exception: Rubrik.co.id reports non-cash ticketing from June 2022, so ask ASDP which methods it accepts before you reach the port. Our Selayar Island travel cost page brings the published prices together.

Where do most visitors stay?

Benteng, according to Sulawesi.com, and the regency plan agrees that the small hotels cluster in that district. Coast stays exist too. Selayar Eco Resort advertises bungalows and glamping tents at Pinang on the east coast, and a second site in the west for May to November. TurtlePhD suggests Benteng first, then the east. The options are laid out in where to stay on Selayar Island, and beach properties are compared on our Selayar Island resort page.

Do you need a visa?

Check your own eligibility first. The Visitor Visa, per Indonesia's immigration service, allows one entry and a 30-day stay, and your passport must have six months left on arrival. See the price table on this page for the fee. Sort this out before you reach Makassar.

What else do travellers ask about Selayar?

Can you snorkel on Selayar Island?

Yes. A 2024 regency list marks Pantai Pa'badilang, Pantai Punagaan, Pasi Gusung, Bone Malea and Liang Kareta for snorkelling. The first two have road access and the others need a joloro boat, so check the trip before you settle on a base.

Is Selayar Island good for diving?

It can be, if walls and current appeal to you. Selayar Dive Resort sells east-coast walls and overhangs, and that is an operator describing its own product. Sulawesi.com says outfits based in Benteng take divers to the south coast. Recompression is the catch, as the resort names Makassar for the nearest chamber.

How much does Selayar Island cost?

No single figure holds, because transport, season and where you sleep change the total. The price table on this page covers a ferry fare, a flight fare and the visa fee, each with its source and check date. Our travel cost page lists the rest.

Can you use cards on Selayar Island?

Do not rely on them. One resort lists a fee payable in cash, and a 2025 travel blog warns that cards may not run reliably outside Benteng. Bring cash from Makassar, and ask ASDP which payment methods the ferry counter takes, since Rubrik.co.id reports non-cash ticketing from June 2022.

What food is Selayar Island known for?

Grilled fish, gogos and pisang ijo, according to Sulawesi.travel, a tour operator. Older regency data, from 2018 to 2021, found main-island restaurants in just two districts, Benteng and Bontosikuyu, so pack food for a day at a quiet beach.

How many nights do you need on Selayar?

Sulawesi.com allows two or three nights, and three or four more with the atoll. Leave slack on top, as our route guide explains, and note that one dive resort sets a longer minimum stay of its own.

Which published prices did we check?

Public fares, rate sheets and fees, each with its source and the month we checked it. Several are old or undated and marked as such. These are third-party figures: confirm with the source before you rely on one.
