Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Fares and rates change, and nothing here is medical or legal advice.

Where to stay on Selayar Island depends on how you want to move around. Benteng is the default: the regency says most hotels are there, and Sulawesi.com says most visitors base themselves in town. West-coast beaches such as Baloiya add sand within road reach. East-coast lodges trade roads and phone signal for forest and reef walls.

How many places to stay are there on Selayar Island?

For Pulau Selayar and the rest of the regency, the tourism master plan counted 310 rooms in hotels and lodgings in 2022 and says most hotels are small and in Benteng district. That is a room count, not a property count. The same plan recorded 20,778 domestic and 195 foreign visitors that year, so this is a small market with few rooms, and one group can fill a five-room lodge.

The plan's table also gives room numbers for individual properties. The eight below hold 186 of the 310 rooms, which leaves 124 in places not shown here. All the numbers date from 2022.

We do not rank these. No verified star ratings or review scores sit behind this page, so size is the only comparison the table supports. A high room count makes space for a group more likely and says nothing about comfort. Online listings may also spell a name differently from the regency's table, so try more than one form before deciding a place has gone.

Why do most visitors stay in Benteng?

Sulawesi.com, a tour operator's guide, says most visitors stay in Benteng, which is also where local dive operators start their south-coast trips. The case for town rests on logistics:

  • Food. The regency plan, on 2018 to 2021 data, confines main-island restaurants to Benteng and Bontosikuyu districts.
  • Arrival. Wikipedia puts H. Aroeppala Airport about 7 km from Benteng, and the plan names Benteng as the port for PELNI ships from Makassar and Bulukumba.
  • From the ferry. Sulawesi.com's travel guide gives 90 minutes by hired car or shared bemo from Pamatata to Benteng. A traveller's blog, TurtlePhD, says about an hour.
  • Without a car. One traveller hired a scooter in town, so ask your hotel whether hire is still offered.
  • In town. Sulawesi.com mentions a beachfront walk and a working market.

The trade-off is the beach. The plan puts Appabatu 4 km from Benteng, Babaere 9 km and Dongkalan 10 km, so the shore is a short ride away and rarely outside your door. Beaches near town are named on our Selayar Island beaches page. Our guide to Benteng, Selayar covers the town itself. What can you find on the west coast?

The west coast is where road access and beach stays overlap. The plan places Baloiya here, a curved, bay-like white-sand beach about 11 km from Benteng, and the Ministry of Tourism says it stretches some 3 km. The regency's 2024 attractions list names Sunari Beach Resort at Baloiya and Asia Beach Baloiya, and shows Baloiya as reachable by road.

Daily life is also on this side. TurtlePhD reports that locals live on the west coast, with warungs and stores along the way. The catch is seasonal: Wikipedia says big waves hit the west side from October to March. Read our Selayar east coast vs west coast comparison before you fix a beach stay in those months.

Which coast are the listed stays on?

The same regency list also names Turtle Bay Selayar, The Pearl Cottage, Quina Paradise Cottage and Villa Norsyah, without saying which coast they are on. Journey Beyond the Horizon, a travel blog dated October 2025, fills some of that in. It puts Sunari Beach Resort, Asia Beach Resort and Quina Paradise Cottage on the west coast south of Benteng, and Selayar Turtle Bay Resort and Selayar Dive Resort on the east coast, open seasonally. It describes two Selayar Eco Resort bases, one near the airport and one at Pantai Pinang, each closed while the other runs, and a Liang Kareta resort on Pasi Island as temporarily closed. A list and a blog cannot show that a place is open today, so ask each property directly.

Pearl Beach Cottage, apparently the property listed as The Pearl Cottage, says on its own site that it has four Lumbung villas with a restaurant and offers snorkelling, diving, kayak and boat trips. Ocean Earth Travels, a Bali dive travel agency, describes the villas as 50 sq m, split between beachfront and garden.

How do you book a room on Selayar Island?

Online coverage is patchy, so expect to use more than one channel. Journey Beyond the Horizon found one Benteng property on Booking and Agoda and a few more on Trip.com and Traveloka. Its authors found Hotel Syafira through a web search, arrived without a booking and report being the only tourists there, and they say free rooms are easy to find except around special events. That is one visit in a place with few rooms, so book ahead for a group or for dates near a public event. Beach and resort properties are better contacted directly, since their opening depends on the season.

What is staying on the east coast like?

Reports on this side describe a remoter stay. TurtlePhD says most places there are accessed by boat and that a phone may not work. A reader's report in Underwater Australasia says no roads reach Selayar Dive Resort. Both are undated personal accounts, so use them as prompts for questions and not as a current survey.

Pinang is the exception: the regency list shows road access there, and Selayar Eco Resort places it on the east coast. The Ministry of Tourism puts Pinang about 80 minutes from Benteng, and the plan gives 35 km. Two operators describe themselves in some detail:

  • Selayar Dive Resort states on its rates page a minimum stay and set transfer days from Bira, with meals included but transfers and the marine park fee excluded. It describes bungalows on a private beach with fan or air conditioning, plus two beach villas of 75 sq m.
  • Selayar Eco Resort says on its undated page that it has 3 bungalows, 3 glamping tents and a restaurant on a 2 km Pinang beach, solar powered. The regency's 2022 table counts 5 rooms against the 6 units described there. Flight details on that page look out of date, so do not plan transport from it.

TurtlePhD suggests Benteng first, then the east, which also leaves you a fallback if a boat transfer moves. For more on the lodges themselves, see our page on Selayar Island resort stays. Divers choosing between them should also read Selayar Island diving.

Which properties close seasonally?

Two operators publish a calendar, and they point in opposite directions:

  • Selayar Dive Resort says its season runs from October to the end of April and that it closes outside those months because of the monsoon. Bluewater, a dive travel agency, says October to May, so treat the resort's own dates as the ones to confirm.
  • Selayar Eco Resort lists a west-coast site for May to November.

Pearl Beach Cottage's news page announced a reopening in November 2024, a reminder that a small property can shut and return for reasons other than weather. A May to September trip rules out Selayar Dive Resort by its own dates. For everywhere else, assume nothing about opening until the property answers.

What should you ask before you decide where to stay on Selayar Island?

Put these to the property in writing and keep the reply:

  1. Are you open on my exact dates this year?
  2. How do I get to you from the airport or from Pamatata, who arranges it, and what happens if a boat cannot run?
  3. Is the last stretch by road or by boat, and can it be done after dark?
  4. Are meals included, and where is the nearest alternative if not?
  5. Does a phone work at the property, on which network, and is there Wi-Fi?
  6. How do you take payment? We found no ATM directory, so bring cash from Makassar.
  7. What is your rule if a flight or ferry stops?
  8. Is this rate current, and what does it leave out?

The price table on this page shows published nightly figures for Benteng guesthouses and mid-range hotels, dive lodges and two resorts. They come from tour operators' guides and resort pages, some undated or past their stated validity, so get a current figure from the property before you rely on one. The Selayar Island travel cost page sets them beside fares and boats.

This site holds no rooms and cannot confirm any. If you ask the desk to look into a stay, that request can lead to a paid booking, which gives us a commercial interest. Our disclaimer explains how that works.

What else do travellers ask about staying on Selayar?

Where should I stay on Selayar Island?

Benteng is the simplest choice for a first visit, since the regency says most hotels are there and Sulawesi.com says most visitors stay in town. Choose Baloiya or another west-coast beach for sand with road access, and an east-coast lodge if diving or quiet matters more than convenience.

Is Benteng a good base on Selayar Island?

For logistics, yes. The airport is about 7 km away by Wikipedia's figure, the regency plan places the main island's restaurants in Benteng and Bontosikuyu districts, and one traveller reports scooter hire in town. The beach is a short ride away.

Can you stay near Baloiya Beach?

The regency list names Sunari Beach Resort at Baloiya and Asia Beach Baloiya, and the regency plan puts the beach about 11 km from Benteng. Confirm that either is open for your dates, and remember the October to March west-side waves that Wikipedia describes.

Is Wi-Fi available in Selayar hotels?

No official source covers hotel Wi-Fi across the island. One traveller, TurtlePhD, reports no Wi-Fi and no cell service on the east coast. Ask each property directly, and ask which mobile network works there.

Are there guesthouses in Benteng, Selayar?

Yes. Sulawesi.travel, a tour operator's guide, describes wisma and small guesthouses in Benteng, and the regency's 2022 table includes Homestay Rumah Teman with 9 rooms. Check its location and whether it still takes guests.

Are there beach hotels on Selayar Island?

Yes, though few are large. The regency's 2022 table lists Selayar Beach Hotel with 30 rooms and Sunari Beach Resort with 15, and Selayar Dive Resort and Selayar Eco Resort describe beachfront stays on their own pages.

Which published prices did we check?

Public fares, rate sheets and fees, each with its source and the month we checked it. Several are old or undated and marked as such. These are third-party figures: confirm with the source before you rely on one.
