Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Fares and rates change, and nothing here is medical or legal advice.

A Selayar Island itinerary needs about five days from Makassar, on our own sketch: two or three nights based in Benteng, which is what Sulawesi.com suggests, plus travel days and a spare day. Add three or four nights if you want the atoll. Cross first, settle in Benteng, then choose beaches and boats by the wind. Keep the last day free of anything that cannot move.
How many days does a Selayar Island itinerary need?
Sulawesi.com, a tour operator's guide, recommends two or three nights on Selayar Island, plus three or four for the atoll. That counts nights on Selayar only. The journey itself uses up most of a day each way if you come overland, and Wikipedia puts the road from Makassar to Bira alone at four to five hours. Add a spare day and the short version comes to about five days from Makassar and back.
These durations are our own planning sketch, not a published figure, using published travel times where they exist. They are not tours or packages, and nothing here is something we sell. The table shows which shape suits which trip.
| Length from Makassar (our sketch) | Nights on Selayar | Base | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| About 5 days | 2 to 3 | Benteng | Town, nearby villages, one west-coast beach or one islet |
| About 7 days | 4 to 5 | Benteng, then one coast | The above, plus a move to the sheltered side of the island |
| 9 days or more | 6 to 8 | Benteng, then Pattumbukan | The above, plus the atoll by charter, with room for delays |
| A resort week | 7 | One east-coast resort | Set by the resort's own transfer day and minimum stay |
What does a short stay look like?
Most hotels are small and in Benteng district, according to the regency's tourism plan, so a short stay naturally stays in town. Our page on where to stay on Selayar Island covers the options. Beaches by road from town are on our Selayar Island beaches page, and budgets on Selayar Island travel cost. The outline below assumes the road and ferry.
- Day 1, crossing: Leave Makassar before dawn for the morning boat, or take the overnight bus the night before, which TurtlePhD reports reaching Benteng around 11am. Sulawesi.com puts Pamatata to Benteng at 90 minutes; TurtlePhD says about an hour. Sleep in Benteng.
- Day 2, town and hills: Walk the beachfront and the working market that Sulawesi.com mentions. If a scooter is available and the last stretch suits it, ride to Bitombang, which The Jakarta Post puts around 7 km from the centre. The price table on this page shows the undated scooter rate.
- Day 3, west coast or islet: Try Baloiya, about 11 km on the regency plan's figures, and Gantarang, about 15 km on a Tata Loka study's, after asking in town about the road. Or take the lepa boat to Gusung, about 30 minutes in The Jakarta Post's 2016 report.
- Day 4, back toward Makassar: Ask ASDP for the first sailing from Pamatata and leave Benteng in good time for it. Sulawesi.com says the afternoon boat is regularly cancelled in rough weather, so use it only as a backup.
- Day 5, spare: Use it in Makassar if all went well, or at the port if it did not.
Flying changes days 1 and 4 and saves real time. Sulawesi.com says the flight takes about 45 minutes, but it also warns that flights have stopped before, so the spare day stays. For the full routing, see how to get to Selayar Island, and for more ideas to swap in, see our list of things to do in Selayar Island. TurtlePhD also notes that locals live on the west coast, with warungs and stores along the road, which makes that side the easy one for a self-guided day.
How do you add the east coast?
Add it after Benteng, which is the order TurtlePhD suggests. Its report of no phone contact on that coast and of most places being reached by boat is one traveller's account, but it should shape your planning: agree pickup times, money and the way back before you leave town, because you may not be able to change them from the beach. Divers should also plan around the operators and seasons on our Selayar Island diving page.
Check the season before you commit. Wikipedia says big waves reach the east side from April to September, which fits the operating dates that lodges publish. Selayar Dive Resort sets a minimum stay and transfer days of its own, explained on our Selayar Island resort page, and opens only from October to the end of April, so a stay there sets your whole calendar and replaces Benteng as a base. Selayar Eco Resort says it sits on Pinang beach on the east coast, with a west-coast site from May to November. The Ministry of Tourism puts Pinang about 80 minutes from Benteng. Our comparison of the east coast and west coast weighs the two sides.
Where does the atoll trip fit?
In the middle, with free days after it. The trip to Taka Bonerate leaves from the Pattumbukan side, away from Benteng: Sulawesi.com's travel guide says the park is reached by chartered boat from Pattumbukan, 4 to 6 hours each way, and that Pamatata to Pattumbukan takes three hours by road. Other sources give other boat times, listed on our things-to-do page. Sulawesi.com allows three or four nights for it. A boat that waits out a bad day should not collide with your ferry home, so do not make it the last thing you do.
That length of crossing in a small boat also depends on the sea more than anything else in this plan. The price table on this page shows a published two-to-three-day charter figure from the same guide. Treat the atoll as a separate decision and not an add-on. On our own planning sketch, not a published figure, it needs a trip of about nine days.
How much buffer should you keep?
At least one full day before any fixed departure, and more if you are travelling in the rougher months. Sulawesi.com gives the same spare-day advice for the flight, and the same logic covers the crossing. The table shows where the slack belongs.
| Stage | Buffer to keep | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Book only the first night firmly | A missed boat moves everything by a day |
| Before an east-coast or atoll move | One night in Benteng | Last place with shops and a change of plan |
| After the atoll | One or two free nights on the island | Boats wait for weather |
| Before leaving Makassar | One full day | Flights and ferries can both stop at short notice |
How do you change the plan in rough weather?
Swap, in this order. First, move boat days to the sheltered coast, using the seasonal pattern above. Second, replace sea days with land days: Bitombang, Gantarang and the inland sites on our list all work in wind, and the regency plan gives distances from Benteng of about 20 km for Suttia waterfall and 6 km for the Balang Kalambu baths. Third, watch the BMKG forecast for Selayar waters, and if a bad spell is coming near your departure date, cross early. An extra night on the mainland is better than a missed flight.
Do not push a small boat to save a schedule. A lost day of sightseeing is the price of an itinerary with an open sea in it. For the monthly pattern, read Selayar Island weather before you fix your dates.
What else helps when planning your days?
What is the best itinerary for Selayar Island?
No single plan suits every month. For a first trip, we would base in Benteng for two or three nights, as Sulawesi.com suggests, add one coast according to the wind, and keep a spare day before leaving Makassar.
What should I do in Benteng?
Sulawesi.com points to the beachfront walk and the working market. Bitombang, Baloiya and Gantarang can be tried in a day if a scooter is available and the last stretch suits it, so ask in town. Gusung is about 30 minutes by boat in a 2016 report.
How long does the road from Pamatata to Benteng take?
Sulawesi.com says 90 minutes by hired car or shared bemo, and TurtlePhD reports about one hour. Use the longer time when you have a boat to catch.
Which beaches fit into a Selayar Island itinerary?
Baloiya, about 11 km from Benteng on the regency plan's figures, fits a half day. Pinang, about 80 minutes away according to the Ministry of Tourism, suits an overnight stop.
Where should I stay for a Selayar Island itinerary?
Benteng for a short stay, because the regency says most hotels are small and in that district. Our accommodation guide covers the coast lodgings for longer trips.
Which published prices did we check?
Public fares, rate sheets and fees, each with its source and the month we checked it. Several are old or undated and marked as such. These are third-party figures: confirm with the source before you rely on one.
