By Selayar Island Editorial Desk
A plain note about Selayar Island Guide: it is an English-language travel guide to Selayar under Juara Holding Group, with a request desk. It is not a resort, dive centre, tour operator, airline or government body. Each claim names its source, conflicts stay visible, and requests through the desk can lead to a paid booking.
What should you know about Selayar Island Guide first?
It is a guide to one island. The pages cover getting to Selayar, its two coasts, its villages and its history, written for English-speaking readers who are about to spend money and time on a trip that is awkward to plan. Taka Bonerate and the Bira crossing come up where a Selayar trip touches them, and the detail on those stays limited to that.
It is written from published sources and does not claim first-hand experience. You will not read here that someone on the desk dived a site or slept in a room, and any description of what a place is like carries the name of whoever said it.
| This guide does | This guide does not |
|---|---|
| Name the source of each claim and say what kind of source it is | Run boats, rooms, tours, schedules or packages |
| Show the disagreement when sources conflict | Pick the more convenient number and hide the other |
| Mark old or undated material as old or undated | Promise availability, sightings, safety or weather |
| Answer requests through a desk | Bind anyone until a written offer exists |
Who is behind this guide?
The site is an English-language guide under Juara Holding Group. Pages carry the byline of the Selayar Island Editorial Desk and not an individual's name, so a question about any page goes to the same place. That place is the request desk, reachable only by the WhatsApp number and email address at the foot of this page. Treat any other number or address that claims to speak for this guide as unconnected to it.
The site is not a resort, dive centre, tour operator, airline or government body, and it is not a contracting party. If you end up booking something after writing to the desk, the company that contracts with you is named in the written offer, and you should read that name before you agree to anything. The disclaimer says this in legal terms; this page says it in ordinary ones.
How are facts checked and dated?
Each claim on a page has to trace back to a named source, and the source's type changes how the claim is worded. A regency document can be stated with some confidence. A resort's description of its own reef is reported as the resort's description. One traveller's experience stays one traveller's experience and is not turned into a rule about the island.
| Source type | Examples on this site | What it is good for | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|---|
| Government | Regency tourism master plan and attraction list; Ministry of Tourism; immigration service | Place names, distances, room counts, visa conditions | Data can lag by years, and transport details age quickly |
| Encyclopedias | Wikipedia; Britannica | Geography and background | Older text is sometimes carried over, and some claims have no citation |
| Press | Kompas; Tempo; The Jakarta Post; Tribun-Timur | Dated events and quoted officials | A report reflects its date and may rest on one informant |
| Academic | Journal papers and conference proceedings | Villages, trade history, archaeology | Narrow scope and small samples |
| Operators | Selayar Dive Resort; Selayar Eco Resort; Sulawesi.com; Sulawesi.travel | Site detail, season calendars, rate sheets | They sell what they describe |
| Booking aggregators | Rome2Rio; Trip.com; Traveloka | A snapshot of what is listed on a route | Airlines and frequency may disagree with each other |
| Personal accounts | TurtlePhD; a diver's report on Underwater Australasia | Texture that official sources omit | One person, often undated |
Dates work the same way. Fares and rates shown on this site carry their source and the month they were checked, and that month is about when we looked at the source, not when the source was written. A 2024 rate sheet checked in November 2026 is still a 2024 rate sheet, and the page will say so. Where a source has no date, it is called undated.
Some topics get no firm claim at all, because nothing dependable is available. That includes a current weekly flight schedule, a fixed ferry timetable, the number of ATMs in Benteng, mobile coverage by network, hotel star ratings and the odds of seeing any particular animal. On those subjects the guide tells you whom to ask.
What do we do when sources disagree?
We print both and name them. Figures from different sources are not averaged, and they are not merged into one range, because a range nobody published looks more reliable than either source. Three disagreements show how this works:
| Question | One source | Another source | How the guide treats it |
|---|---|---|---|
| How large is the island? | Wikipedia: 798.58 sq km | Britannica: 899 sq km | Both figures, both named |
| How many islands are in the group? | Wikipedia: 73 | Regency master plan: about 130; WWF-Indonesia: 130 | Both counts, with the regency's own figure identified as such |
| When was the Nekara drum found? | Kompas: 1868 | The Jakarta Post: 1686 | Left open on the Selayar kettle drum page |
Sometimes the reasons for a gap are visible and we say what they might be. Two different authorities can be counting different things, or one figure can simply be older. When we can only guess at the reason, the sentence says it is a guess. Sometimes the conflict changes what you should do, as with flights to Selayar, where sources name different airlines. The advice then is to confirm with the airline before you build a trip around any of them.
Attribution also covers terms. When the Ministry of Tourism groups dive sites into East Selayar Beach, West Selayar Beach and Takabonerate, those are reported as the ministry's groupings. Site names such as Shark Point are the operator's own and are presented that way.
How can a request lead to a booking?
Requests through the desk can lead to a paid booking, so we have a commercial interest. You should weigh everything on this site knowing that. Here is the sequence when someone writes in:
- You send your dates, your group and what you are trying to do.
- The desk answers what it can, including when the honest answer is that something cannot be confirmed.
- If a booking is possible, any fee, the price, the payment terms and the company that contracts with you are stated in writing in an offer.
- You decide. Nothing binds you, or anyone else, before that written offer is agreed.
Being named on a page is not an endorsement, and it does not mean a business is available through the desk. Pages exist to answer questions about the island, and many of those answers will not lead to anything the desk can arrange. Please do not pay anyone on the strength of this site alone. The Selayar Island FAQ covers the common trip questions if you would like to start there.
How do you report a correction?
This guide will go out of date in places, and a reader on the ground may know before we do. Ferries change, guesthouses close and a road can wash out. A useful correction has four parts:
- The page address and the sentence you are questioning.
- What you believe is right, and when you learned it.
- A link, a photo of a notice, or the name of an office or company that can confirm it.
- Whether you are writing as a traveller, a resident or the business concerned.
Send it through the contact page or either channel below. We check it against the source, then either change the sentence, add your information as a further report with its origin stated, or leave the page as it is if nothing can be confirmed. A traveller's message may appear as a traveller's report and nothing stronger. If you run a business named here, you are welcome to correct your own details, and those will be attributed to you as an operator statement. Please leave out passport details, card numbers and anything else private.
What do readers ask about this guide?
Who owns selayarisland.com?
The site is an English-language guide under Juara Holding Group. Any company that contracts with a guest is named in the written offer and should not be assumed from this website.
Who writes the Selayar Island guide?
The Selayar Island Editorial Desk writes it. Pages carry the desk byline in place of an individual's name, and each claim points to its source so that you can judge it for yourself.
How does the Selayar Island guide check facts?
Each claim is traced to a named source and worded according to the kind of source it is. Operator claims are attributed, undated material is marked, and conflicts between sources are printed rather than resolved by choosing one.
Is the Selayar Island guide a tour operator?
No. It does not own or run boats, rooms, tours, schedules or packages. It is a guide with a request desk, and a request can lead to a paid booking only through a written offer.
