Selayar snorkeling is listed by the regency's tourism office at Liang Kareta, Bone Malea, Pasi Gusung, Pa'badilang and Punagaan, with more at Bahuluang, Tambolongan and Sumingi. Some are reached by road and others by joloro, a local boat. Wind decides which coast is calm: big waves hit the west from October to March and the east from April to September.
Where can you go for Selayar snorkeling?
Most writing about Selayar's water is aimed at divers. The Ministry of Tourism, for example, groups dive sites into three zones: East Selayar Beach, West Selayar Beach and Takabonerate. For someone without a tank, the more useful document is the regency's 2024 list of leading attractions, because it says which sites have snorkelling and whether you arrive by road or by joloro, the small local boat. The table below follows that list.
| Site | Access on the regency list | What else is recorded |
|---|---|---|
| Pa'badilang | Road | Snorkelling listed; one of the ten marine destinations named by Tempo |
| Punagaan | Road | Snorkelling listed; also among Tempo's ten |
| Sumingi | Road | Turtle conservation area, snorkelling, traditional food |
| Liang Kareta | Joloro | Snorkelling, gazebos, toilets; counted as unmanaged in a 2018 study |
| Bone Malea | Joloro | Snorkelling listed; counted as unmanaged in the same study |
| Pasi Gusung | Joloro | Snorkelling listed; lagoon and mangrove in the regency plan |
| Tambolongan | Joloro | Snorkelling, diving, fishing |
| Bahuluang | 20 minutes by car and joloro from Bone Taringan | Snorkelling, diving, fishing, villa, restaurant |
Read the gazebos and toilets at Liang Kareta alongside the 2018 Universitas Negeri Makassar study, which found 16 marine sites unmanaged, among them Liang Kareta, Je'neiya and Bone Malea. The list is newer, but plan on looking after yourself. We found no record of lifeguards or mask hire at these sites, and a listing tells you nothing about how the reef looks today.
Which snorkelling spots can you reach by road?
On the regency list, Pa'badilang, Punagaan and Sumingi combine road access with snorkelling. The same list gives road access to Baloiya, Pinang, Karang Indah and Appatanah. Those entries are recorded for access, so ask locally about the water before you make the trip for snorkelling alone. Distances from Benteng come from the regency's tourism master plan: Baloiya about 11 km, Karang Indah 17 km, Pinang 35 km and Appatana 52 km. The Ministry of Tourism puts Pinang at about 80 minutes.
The east coast needs one caution. The list shows road access to Pinang, yet TurtlePhD, a traveller's blog, reports that most places on the east coast are reached by boat. Both can hold true if a road reaches some beaches and not others. Confirm the last stretch with your lodging before you set out. Our guide to Selayar Island beaches compares the shores themselves.
Which need a local boat?
The regency list gives joloro access to Liang Kareta, Bone Malea, Pasi Gusung, Tambolongan and Polassi. The spelling varies, and the plan writes jolloro. It also records Je'neiya, about 10 km from Benteng by traditional sailing boat, and Bone Tappalang, about 20 minutes by jolloro from Pattumbukang or Appatana. The Jakarta Post reported in 2016 that Gusung is about 30 minutes from Benteng by lepa boat, another local type. Details are on our page for Pasi Gusung Island.
TurtlePhD describes a day trip to an island made entirely of dried coral and names Appatanah as a place to charter a boat from the west side. The blog does not name that island, so do not assume it is Bahuluang Island, which Tempo describes as land formed from broken coral.
Before you hire a boat, ask the owner:
- Which side of the island is sheltered today, and how will that change by the afternoon?
- Are there life jackets for everyone, and will someone stay on the boat while you are in the water?
- Where exactly will you swim, and how strong is the current there at this state of the tide?
- Is there shade, drinking water and enough fuel for the return trip?
- What time will you turn back, and what is the plan if the wind rises?
Is there snorkelling near Benteng?
The closest options are short boat trips and beaches a few kilometres out. Pasi Gusung, at about half an hour by boat, is the one the regency's list and the press both support. WWF-Indonesia also calls the waters west of Selayar and around Gusung one of the most important habitats for sea turtles, which gives that stretch some interest beyond the reef.
Sulawesi.travel, a tour operator's guide, calls two beaches near Benteng calm, and our page on Selayar Island beaches names them. That description concerns calm water and not coral, so do not assume there is a reef to see.
What might you see?
Operators report more than anyone else, so read them as operators. Turtles on almost every house reef dive, and passing dugongs seen by snorkellers on good days, are the claims of Selayar Dive Resort. That is one business describing its own reef on the east coast, and it carries no promise. WWF-Indonesia's fisheries survey records fishers meeting turtles, whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins and dugongs, with turtles the most common. It describes what fishers encounter, so it gives no odds for a swimmer.
A diver's undated report in Underwater Australasia puts reef tops between 3 and 9 m, and Selayar Dive Resort gives water of 26 to 30 degrees C. Both describe the dive area and may not hold at a beach elsewhere on the island. Reef condition is the main gap: the coral measurements we found concern the atoll's islands and not the main island.
What should non-divers plan for?
Start with the wind. Wikipedia notes that big waves hit the west side when the west wind blows from October to March, and the east side when the east wind blows from April to September, so people can choose a place to snorkel all year. Other records fit that pattern. Selayar Dive Resort, on the east coast, opens only from October to the end of April, and Selayar Eco Resort says its west-coast site opens from May to November. WWF-Indonesia reports that fishers fish the sheltered eastern shallows in the west season.
| Months | Big waves reach | Where to look first |
|---|---|---|
| October to March | West side | Pinang has listed road access but no listed snorkelling; ask locally which east-side spots to try |
| April to September | East side | Baloiya and Pasi Gusung; ask locally which other west-side spots to try |
That is a rule of thumb for choosing a coast, and it will not tell you about a particular morning. For that, check the BMKG marine forecast for Selayar waters, which gives wind, gusts, waves and warnings. The Underwater Australasia report adds that currents strengthen around the full moon, so a calm-looking bay may behave differently that week. See our page on Selayar Island weather for the monthly picture.
The rest is preparation, and this part is our own advice rather than a published requirement. Bring your own mask, fins and reef-safe sun protection, because we found no rental shop, though Pearl Beach Cottage says it offers snorkelling and kayaks. Carry water and food for any trip beyond town. Do not go alone, and tell someone when you expect to be back, especially on the east coast, where signal may be absent. Our page on whether Selayar Island is safe has the hospital and evacuation details.
What do non-divers ask about snorkelling on Selayar?
Is Liang Kareta good for snorkeling?
The regency lists snorkelling there, reached by joloro, with gazebos and toilets. A 2018 study counted it among unmanaged sites. Ask a boat owner about recent reef conditions.
Where can non-divers snorkel in Selayar?
The regency list names Pa'badilang, Punagaan and Sumingi by road, and Liang Kareta, Bone Malea, Pasi Gusung, Tambolongan and Bahuluang by local boat. Snorkelling needs no dive certificate.
Can you snorkel from the shore in Selayar?
The regency list gives road access to Pa'badilang, Punagaan and Sumingi, without saying how far the reef lies from the sand. Ask locally before you swim out.
Do you need a boat for snorkeling in Selayar?
Not always. Pa'badilang, Punagaan and Sumingi are listed by road, while the islets and Liang Kareta are listed by joloro. A boat widens your choice when wind closes one coast.
Which Selayar coast has calmer snorkeling water?
It changes with the season. Wikipedia puts the big waves on the west side from October to March and on the east side from April to September, so look to the opposite shore.
Can beginners snorkel around Selayar Island?
We found no beginner rating for any site. As our own advice rather than a published requirement, ask your lodging or the boat owner whether the day's water suits your ability, and take someone with you.
