The best time to visit Selayar Island depends on the coast. Wikipedia's wind pattern favours the west side from April to September and the east side from October to March, and operators' calendars broadly follow it. No single best month exists, and sources disagree on when the dry season starts, so choose by activity first.

When is the best time to visit Selayar Island?

Choose the activity first, since it fixes the coast and the coast fixes the month. For a town-based trip on Selayar Island, with beaches and villages along the west side, April to September is the published sheltered window, and the dry-season claims below mostly fall inside it. For east-coast diving, the period from October into the new year is when the east-coast resort opens, even though much of that season is wet.

January and February are, on Sulawesi.com's destination page, the roughest of the year at sea. That matters whichever coast you pick, because most overland travellers still have to cross the water to get there.

Why do published seasons disagree?

Because they measure different things. Some describe rain, others wave height, others a single business's opening dates. Set side by side, they look like this:

Read closely, the three dry-season statements do share ground. The regency plan, the Sulawesi.com guide and the Sulawesi.travel guide all include July, August, September and October. What they contest is the edge: whether the dry months begin in April, May or July, and whether November belongs. Note too that Sulawesi.com publishes more than one framing on its own site, so a single operator can appear to disagree with itself when one page discusses rain and another discusses diving.

Which coast suits which months?

The clearest statement is on Wikipedia: west wind from October to March puts big waves on the west side, east wind from April to September puts them on the east side, and so people can choose somewhere to dive, snorkel or fish all year. WWF-Indonesia supplies a useful second angle from a different kind of evidence. Its survey found fishers travelling far out to western waters in the east season and working the sheltered eastern shallows in the west season.

Two caveats follow. The switch is not a sharp line: Selayar Dive Resort stays open through April, a month past Wikipedia's boundary, and Selayar Eco Resort keeps its west-coast site running into November, well after it. Take local advice in April, October and November, when these calendars overlap. The other trade-off is rain. The east-coast season overlaps the regency's December to April rainy period, so calm water on that side often comes with wet skies. When is the ferry most exposed to weather?

Most exposed in January and February, going by the sources that name months. The crossing between Bira and Pamatata does not benefit from the coast-switching logic, since you make it whichever side you plan to stay on. Sulawesi.com's month table puts the share of time that is rough for small boats highest in January and February. Official and encyclopedic warnings point the same way but differ on scale. The Ministry of Tourism says west-monsoon waves can reach two metres and that ferries stop when waves are dangerously high. Wikipedia's airport article says waves around Selayar can reach 4 to 5 m and that services may be suspended at short notice. Sulawesi.com adds a practical detail: it says the crossing runs twice daily in dry season, near 09:00 and 13:00, with the afternoon sailing the one regularly cancelled in rough weather.

If you travel between November and March, the months Sulawesi.travel links to larger swells, take the earlier boat where one exists and do not plan a same-day flight out of Makassar.

When is the best time for diving?

That depends on where you dive. Published windows differ, partly because they describe different places:

• East-coast resort diving. Selayar Dive Resort says October to the end of April and closes otherwise. Bluewater, a dive travel agency, is reported as saying October to May.
• General Selayar diving. Sulawesi.com says September to November, when it describes the sea as calm.
• The atoll. The Ministry of Tourism's April to mid-May and October to mid-November windows are specific to Taka Bonerate and should not be applied to the main island.

How do you check conditions before you go?

1. Read the BMKG marine forecast for Selayar waters, which gives wind, gusts, waves and warnings.
2. Read the BMKG forecast for Pamatata port in the days before the crossing.
3. Confirm sailing times with ASDP Selayar or call centre 021191. Rubrik.co.id reports that ASDP's own listing is undated and advises this check.
4. Confirm flights with the airline, not an aggregator page.
5. Ask any resort whether it is open for your dates, since at least two publish seasonal opening.

It depends on the base. Selayar Dive Resort on the east coast opens from October to the end of April, while Sulawesi.com recommends September to November. Both include October and November, so start there and confirm with the operator you choose.

Sources differ. The regency plan says May to November, Sulawesi.com says July to October and Sulawesi.travel says April to October. All three include July to October, so those are the safest months to call dry.

When is Selayar best for snorkeling?
