Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Fares and rates change, and nothing here is medical or legal advice.
Selayar Island diving, as operators describe it, centres on steep east-coast walls reached by short boat rides, with a second area on the west side. Selayar Dive Resort, the operator publishing the most detail, dives only from October to the end of April. It names Makassar as the nearest recompression chamber, so plan your margins before you book.
What is Selayar Island diving like?
Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism sorts the dive sites of Selayar Island and its waters into three areas: the east and west beaches, plus Takabonerate. This page covers the first two. The atoll is a separate expedition with its own boats and logistics, so it appears here only where it changes a decision.
Most of the published detail concerns the east coast, and most of that comes from one business. According to Selayar Dive Resort, the fringing reef on that side is largely walls and drop-offs, broken by caves, shelves and overhangs. The same operator says this reef was pivotal in creating the marine park in 2002, which is its own account of events. On its diving page it puts its most distant sites a 15-minute speedboat ride away, and says the tide sets each dive time, with the plan given out the evening before. Expect a day built around the water, with no fixed clock to plan against.
A diver's report in Underwater Australasia, an undated reader contribution, adds texture: reef tops between 3 and 9 m, depths to 55 m dived daily on that trip, and currents that strengthen at full moon. That is one group's experience and not a survey. It does fit the wall profile the operator publishes, and the full-moon note is worth checking against your dates.
For exposure protection, the operator quotes water of 26 to 30 degrees C all year and advises a suit of 3 to 5 mm. Sulawesi.com, a tour operator's guide citing NOAA data, puts sea temperature at 26.9 C in August and 29.5 C in November and December, so the two broadly agree.
Where are the main dive areas?
| Area | Who describes it | What they say |
|---|---|---|
| East Selayar Beach | Selayar Dive Resort | Walls, caves and overhangs within a short boat ride of the resort |
| West Selayar Beach and the straits | Wikipedia | Sites reached from Benteng include Pulau Kambing and one called Selayar Atoll; parts of the entry carry no citation |
| South coast, from Benteng | Sulawesi.com | Most visitors stay in Benteng, and local dive operators run trips to wall and reef sites on the south coast |
| Takabonerate | Ministry of Tourism | Listed as the third zone; not covered on this site |
Two named sites show the range. The operator puts Shark Point 10 minutes away by boat and describes a wall meeting sand at about 30 m, with the slope followed down to about 40 m. Karl's Corner goes much further, with sand sloping to around 55 m, and is usually dived as a drift; the operator advises only experienced divers to go deep there. A fuller run through the operator's named sites, with their depths and character, is on our Selayar dive sites guide.
Geographic labels overlap. Sulawesi.com speaks of the south coast, while Underwater Australasia puts Selayar Dive Resort on the eastern shore, close to the southern tip. When an operator offers you "east" or "south" sites, ask for a map and the boat time.
Who runs diving on the island?
Few businesses can be named with any confidence, and what each one does differs. Read this list as leads to check. For rooms near the Benteng operators, see where to stay on Selayar Island.
- Selayar Dive Resort. A dive-focused resort with its own boats, season and rate sheet. It is the clearest published option, and its minimum stay shapes the whole trip, as our page on Selayar Island resort options explains.
- Local operators in Benteng. Sulawesi.com says they exist and run south-coast trips. Ask any operator you find for current equipment and insurance details before paying.
- Pearl Beach Cottage. Its own site lists diving among its activities, alongside snorkelling, kayaking and boat trips.
- Selayar Eco Resort. Its own page claims a deep wall just off its sand. Ask it directly what diving support it provides.
- Tanadoang Marine. Tempo reported in 2021 that this local conservation and tourism community at Pasi Gusung received a compressor, in a story on wreck heritage as a draw for visitors.
- Sileya Scuba Divers. Indonesia Expat names it in connection with a turtle project conceived in 2012. Ask whether it still takes divers.
When can you dive the east coast?
Each source below answers a different question: one resort's opening dates, an agency's version of them, the island in general, and the atoll.
| Source | Window given | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Selayar Dive Resort | October through April; shut for the monsoon in other months | Its own east-coast operation |
| Bluewater, a dive travel agency | October to May | The same resort season, as the agency gives it |
| Sulawesi.com | September to November, when the sea is calm | Selayar diving in general |
| Ministry of Tourism | Two windows: April into mid-May, October into mid-November | Taka Bonerate only |
The wind explains much of this. Wikipedia describes the west coast taking the big waves from October to March, then the east coast from April to September, so people pick their coast by the calendar. That is why a closed season on the east coast does not mean the whole island stops. October and November is the only stretch that the resort, the agency and Sulawesi.com all include, which makes it a sensible first question to put to an operator. It is not a promise of calm water. Our Selayar Island itinerary shows how dive days fit around the ferry and a spare day. Month-by-month detail sits on our guide to the best time to visit Selayar Island.
What marine life do operators report?
Operators report what sells their sites, so treat these as descriptions and not as odds. Selayar Dive Resort says white tip and grey reef sharks are frequently seen at Shark Point, and it describes Denise and Bargibant's pygmy seahorses on its Caves and Overhangs wall and leaf fish, ghost pipefish and garden eels on the Opera Sand muck slope. Its home page claims turtles on nearly every dive on the house reef, and dugongs passing snorkellers on good days. For Pulau Kambing, Wikipedia lists bumphead parrotfish, cuttlefish, and white-tip and black-tip sharks.
WWF-Indonesia records fishers meeting turtles most often, and also dugongs, dolphins, mantas and whale sharks. That is a fisheries survey and says nothing about what a diver on a given week should expect, so we give no season or likelihood for whale sharks, mantas or hammerheads.
What level of diver is it suited to?
The published picture leans towards divers comfortable on walls and in current. Depths quoted run well past recreational comfort at some sites, and the operator itself reserves deep dives at Karl's Corner for experienced divers. The Underwater Australasia report puts reef tops at 3 to 9 m. It does not say how shallow a given dive can stay, so ask the operator for the profile.
We found no published minimum certification or logged-dive requirement for the island, so get one in writing before you commit. Ask any operator:
- What certification and how many logged dives do you require for each site?
- Who decides on the day whether a current is too strong, and what is the alternative dive?
- What are your guide ratios, and do you offer a refresher dive first?
- What depth limit do you apply, and does it change at full moon?
What about emergencies and recompression?
Selayar Dive Resort states that the nearest recompression chamber is in Makassar. Getting there means a flight on a route that Sulawesi.com says has stopped more than once, or a sea crossing and a long road, both set out under how to get to Selayar Island. Carry insurance that covers evacuation, and ask your instructor or dive insurer what margin they advise where no chamber is close. Ask the operator how it would move a diver at night or in bad weather, what oxygen it carries on the boat, and how the no-fly interval fits your flight home. The legs of that journey, and the island's hospital, are set out on our safety page, is Selayar Island safe.
Budget for one more item: a per-person Selayar Marine Park fee, which Selayar Dive Resort collects in cash on site. The price table on this page shows that fee and the resort's daily diving rate from its 2024 sheet, so ask for the current figures. The Selayar Island travel cost page sets them beside rooms and transport. For days out of the water, read Selayar Island beaches and things to do in Selayar Island.
What do divers ask about Selayar most often?
Does Selayar have shore diving?
Selayar Dive Resort's 2024 rate sheet counts a house reef alongside two boat dives a day, and Selayar Eco Resort says a wall lies 150 m off its beach. Ask each property how you enter the reef and whether a boat is needed, because neither statement describes shore diving as such.
Where is Shark Point in Selayar?
Selayar Dive Resort lists Shark Point a 10-minute boat ride away, which places it near the resort on the east coast. The name is the operator's own, so another outfit may call the same wall something else. Ask for a chart position if it matters to you.
What should divers wear at Selayar?
Selayar Dive Resort quotes water of 26 to 30 degrees C all year and advises a 3 to 5 mm suit. A Sulawesi.com table puts the sea at 26.9 C in August and 29.5 C in November and December.
Is East Selayar good for wall diving?
The resort there calls its reef mostly walls and drop-offs, and an Underwater Australasia reader report describes dives to 55 m. Both accounts are favourable, but the first comes from a business selling those dives, so read it as a description and not a rating.
How much does diving cost in Selayar?
The price table on this page shows Selayar Dive Resort's daily diving rate and its marine park fee line from a 2024 sheet. Those are one operator's old figures, and transfers and stays are separate. Ask for a current written quote.
Do you need a dive guide in Selayar?
Tides, current and depth vary by site, and dive times are set the evening before at the one operator that publishes its routine, so expect to dive with the operator's team and check its policy before you travel.
Which published prices did we check?
Public fares, rate sheets and fees, each with its source and the month we checked it. Several are old or undated and marked as such. These are third-party figures: confirm with the source before you rely on one.
| Item | Published price | Source | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selayar Dive Resort diving, per person per day, two boat dives plus house reef (2024 rate sheet) | US$121 | selayar-dive-resort.com | Nov 2026 |
| Selayar Marine Park fee, per person, cash on site (as listed by Selayar Dive Resort, 2024 rate sheet) | US$50 | selayar-dive-resort.com | Nov 2026 |

How do I reach the desk?
Send your dates, certification level, logged dives and whether you want walls or small marine life to WhatsApp +62 811-3941-4563 or bd@juaraholding.com. The desk replies to questions and can pass a dive request along, and that can lead to a paid booking, which gives us a commercial interest. We hold no dive boats or dive slots. Nothing is confirmed until a written offer names the price, any fee and the company you would contract with.
Send the desk your dates, group size, and what you want to do. The desk replies in writing.
