Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Fares and rates change, and nothing here is medical or legal advice.

Pamatata ferry port is Selayar's landing for the line from Bira, about 40 km from Benteng by the regency's figure. ASDP told the press in July 2026 that two ferries normally serve the line. Published timetables differ and rough seas can stop sailings, so confirm on the day and leave time to travel on from the port.
Where is Pamatata ferry port?
The regency's master plan identifies three gateways by sea, and Pamatata is the one that matters to most road travellers. The plan's distance table puts it 40 km from Benteng, the regency seat. It is a place you pass through, and what you probably came for lies elsewhere on the island.
| Gateway | What it connects to, per the regency plan | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Pamatata | Bira | The ferry line this page covers |
| Benteng | PELNI ships from Makassar and Bulukumba | These details date from 2018, so look up PELNI's sailings now |
| Pattumbukang | East Nusa Tenggara | Three hours by road from Pamatata, per Sulawesi.com |
If you searched for a ferry from Makassar, note that Rome2Rio says none runs direct, with an alternative through Labuan Bajo and Jampea to Pattumbukang of about two days, while the regency tourism office reported DLU's overnight ship to Benteng from 2021. Neither lands at Pamatata. This page picks up the usual trip after the road to Bira. The whole route, flights included, is compared in how to get to Selayar Island.
Which ferries serve Pamatata?
Rubrik.co.id reports that PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry operates the line. Speaking to Tribun-Timur in July 2026, ASDP's Bira office described a normal service of two ships and a weekday flow of 300 to 450 passengers at its port.
Ship names are less settled. According to Rubrik, KMP Balibo was due to give way to KMP Awu-Awu in September 2026, a change its reporter did not confirm directly with ASDP. Treat a ship's name in an old post as a lead and ask ASDP which vessel is sailing on your date.
How long is the crossing and how far is it?
Allow for the longer figure when you plan what happens after you land.
| Source | Duration | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| Rubrik.co.id, citing ASDP's route database checked 22 September 2026 | About two hours | 18 nautical miles |
| ASDP Bira, via Tribun-Timur, July 2026 | About two hours | Not given |
| Ministry of Tourism | About two hours | Not given |
| Sulawesi.com, a tour operator's guide | Two and a half hours | Not given |
What timetable do sources report?
A fixed Pamatata timetable cannot honestly be printed, so here is what each source says and how old it is.
- ASDP's route database, via Rubrik. Two daily trips from Bira at 08:00 and 14:00 WITA. The listing is undated. Rubrik itself warns readers to check with ASDP Selayar or call centre 021191.
- Sulawesi.com. Two boats a day in the dry months, at around 09:00 and 13:00, and the later one is often dropped when the weather turns.
Both refer to departures from the Bira side. Neither source gives a departure time from Pamatata, which is exactly what you need for the trip back, so put that question to ASDP Selayar in plain terms and ask again the day before you sail.
Weather sits above any timetable. In a rough sea, the Ministry of Tourism says, the ferries stay in port. Two free official pages help you judge this yourself, both from BMKG, the national weather agency: a Pamatata port forecast and a forecast for the surrounding waters that shows wave height, wind and any warnings. Seasonal patterns are on our Selayar Island weather page.
Plan as if you may wait a day: carry water, food and some cash, keep medication in your hand luggage, and avoid booking anything on the far side of the crossing that same evening.
How do you pay and book?
ASDP announced non-cash payment at Bira and Pamatata on 21 June 2022: virtual accounts, prepaid cards from BRI, Mandiri, BNI and BCA, and the wallets OVO, ShopeePay, LinkAja and Dana. It told passengers to bring identity documents and complete the manifest when buying. Online sales followed: Quarta.id reported in August 2024 that ASDP had launched trip.ferizy.com for this line that July, with GoPay, Indomaret and Alfamart among the payment routes.
Journey Beyond the Horizon, a travel blog dated October 2025, calls tickets online only and asks for check-in at least 120 minutes before departure, yet its authors bought their return ticket on the ferry itself. So treat booking online as the default and ask ASDP on 021191 whether a counter or on-board sale will run on your day. Whether foreign-issued cards work on these channels is unreported, so ask.
Fares appear in two versions. Tribun-Timur's July 2026 report lists adult, infant, motorcycle and passenger car or minibus fares, while ASDP's undated listing, through Rubrik, shows a different adult fare. We show both in the price table on this page, unmerged, and the reported one is the more recent. Vehicle space is the case where an early answer matters most.
How do you get from Pamatata to the rest of the island?
The port is 40 km from Benteng, so plan the onward leg first.
| To | Reported time or distance | How | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Benteng | 90 minutes | Hired car or shared bemo | Sulawesi.com |
| Benteng | About one hour | Drive from the ferry terminal | TurtlePhD, a traveller's blog |
| Benteng | 40 km | Road distance | Regency plan |
| Pattumbukan | Three hours | Road | Sulawesi.com |
Times differ by half an hour for the same road, and each is one account. Hired car and shared bemo fares, from the same tour operator's guide, are in the price table. The plan's other distances are measured from Benteng and not from the port, so add the Pamatata leg yourself: it lists Pinang at 35 km and Appatana at 52 km from Benteng, for example.
A through option also exists. On TurtlePhD's account, a sleeper bus leaves Malengkeri terminal in Makassar about 11pm, rolls onto the ferry, and gets to Benteng about 11am; Selayar Eco Resort describes the same service. If you take it, you stay with the bus and do not have to solve the onward leg at all. The regency plan recorded 15 passenger buses from 8 companies in 2018, an old figure, so ask what runs now.
The morning boat leaves more daylight for a road that Sulawesi.com puts at 90 minutes, and the later sailing is the one it says is often dropped. One traveller hired a scooter in Benteng, which is another reason to treat the town as your base. Our Benteng Selayar guide covers what is there when you arrive.
If you need a car waiting, ask your accommodation before you board.
Which published prices did we check?
Public fares, rate sheets and fees, each with its source and the month we checked it. Several are old or undated and marked as such. These are third-party figures: confirm with the source before you rely on one.

What do people ask about Pamatata?
How often does the Selayar ferry run?
ASDP's undated route database, reported by Rubrik.co.id, shows two daily trips from Bira, and Sulawesi.com also says twice daily in dry season. Sulawesi.com warns that bad weather often cancels the later boat, so check with ASDP on call centre 021191.
Is KMP Balibo serving the Selayar route?
Possibly not any more. Rubrik.co.id expected KMP Awu-Awu to take over from it in September 2026, without confirming this directly with ASDP. Ask ASDP which ship is sailing on your date.
Can you take a car on the ferry to Selayar?
Yes, going by the fare list Tribun-Timur reported in July 2026, which includes passenger cars, minibuses and motorcycles in two engine classes. Space and booking rules are not covered in that report, so ask ASDP before you drive to the port.
How much does a ferry trip to Selayar cost?
See the price table on this page. It shows the fares reported by the press in July 2026 and the adult fare from an undated ASDP listing, and the two do not match. Check at the port or with ASDP before you rely on either.
How do I get from Pamatata to Benteng?
Sulawesi.com says a hired car or a shared bemo takes 90 minutes, while the TurtlePhD traveller blog reports about one hour by road. The overnight bus from Makassar carries on to Benteng after the ferry, so through passengers avoid this step.
Is there a direct ferry from Makassar to Selayar?
Sources conflict. Rome2Rio says none runs direct, while the regency tourism office reported DLU's overnight ship from 2021 and a 2025 blog still lists it. Ask DLU. Rome2Rio also maps a roundabout option by way of Labuan Bajo and Jampea, about two days in all.
